The staff at Herzog Hospital’s Children’s Chronic Respiratory Care Department continues to find new ways to help improve the health and quality of life of each child
in the department.
Ten-year-old Yosef has been hospitalized in the Department since his birth. His family wanted to find some way to take their son to visit the Kotel – the Western Wall – for special prayers to celebrate his birthday, even though he was hooked up to a respirator and could not get out of bed.
Herzog’s staff went into action. They arranged for a special ICU ambulance that could transport him, while he remained in his bed, hooked up to the respirator. They coordinated with United Hatzalah to transport him, and with the approval of the Chief Rabbi of the Kotel, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, along with the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, they arranged for the ambulance with Yosef to drive right up to the Kotel.
Prayers for his health and lots of tears celebrated this extraordinary Herculean collaboration that fulfilled the family’s yearning and request for this special mitzvah and experience.
This is just another example of the efforts of Herzog’s exceptional dedicated staff, who work every day to ensure that the children in the department receive not only the finest of health care, but also receive whatever extra attention and care they need, including education in the hospital’s special school, its multi-stimulation Snozelen rooms, music, pet therapy, and so much more.
This heartwarming story received international media coverage, including in the Baltimore Jewish Life.
